About Prof. Aayed Alqahtani
Professor Aayed Alqahtani is Consultant of MIS and Obesity Surgery at King Saud University.
He is also the Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director of New You Medical Center.
He is the Director of King Saud University Obesity Chair and is a prominent bariatric surgeon.
Prof. Alqahtani graduated with an honors degree in medicine and surgery from King Saud University in Saudi Arabia.
He completed general surgery training programs in McGill University and Université de Montréal where he was featured on the Dean’s Honors List of Excellent Results in Postdoctoral Training.
After receiving additional laparoscopy training in USA, Prof. Alqahtani returned to Saudi Arabia where he performed advanced minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic interventions in adult and pediatric patients.
Prof. Alqahtani headed the postgraduate training program in KSU, where he is credited with revolutionizing apprenticeship and skill transfer
methods at King Saud University College of Medicine postgraduate program.
Prof. Alqahtani transferred his skills and knowledge to hundreds of surgeons across the country and worldwide.
Prof. Alqahtani is a pioneer of endoscopic weight loss strategies to treat obesity.
His personalized multidisciplinary approach includes endoscopy and surgery for patients from all age groups,
Prof. Alqahtani’s paper on endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty was among the top ten most read bariatric news articles in 2019, and it was the most mentioned, discussed, and cisted paper in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
Prof. Alqahtani is credited with publishing studies that shaped national and international guidelines.
His work on interventional weight loss in children and adolescents addressed many of the prevailing concerns including durability of weight loss, degree of co-morbidity resolution, and impact on growth and skeletal maturity.
Prof. Alqahtani has published many research articles, chapters and books. He has been the guest speaker in more than 500 international events and has served as faculty of many national and international training courses and workshops in MIS, robotic surgery and obesity. He is active in numerous national and international societies, and he is on the editorial board of well-known medical journals.
Prof. Alqahtani was a founding member of the Pan Arab Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (PASMBS) and the President of the Society in 2018. He is also a founding member of International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity – Middle East and North Africa Chapter (IFSO-MENAC).
He is the chair of the membership committee of the Saudi Arabia Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (SASMBS) and the member of society board. He was elected President of the International Pediatric Endosurgery Group (IPEG) in 2019 and currently a member of the Executive Committee of the society.
Moreover, he founded the Middle East Chapter of IPEG in 2015.
